For a while now I’ve been wanting a live command-line version of Ubuntu. I even tried to make my own once or twice, but I never really followed through. Lucky for me, somebody else went through the trouble.
Now I can use that as a core-level test to see if a machine is more or less Ubuntu-compliant. My only suggestion, if you use it the same way, is to manually trim splash
and quiet
from the kernel boot line when you start it up. That way, you don’t run the risk of encountering that weird ultra-slow boot that sometimes hampers older hardware running 7.10.
Absolutely Awesome! I have wanted one of these myself for awhile π

That forum thread is one of the best examples for the frustration of user support. You replied with a solution, then a few comments later someone else also replies, as though you hadn’t, and on top of that another user says he found that blind idiot’s reply helpful, obviously suffering from the same eye disease.
π Yes, that will happen. It’s unfortunate, but what can be done? People either don’t read the whole thread or misunderstand the advice that was given. It’s just our nature as humans. I’ve gotten used to it. π
Or haven’t refreshed the page yet, I’ve gotten used to other people by talking to them and realizing they’re made of skin and bone too.
Right again, and I apologize. I had my moderator hat on when I wrote the “gotten used to it” comment — I realize now that it sounds terribly snippy.
Thanks again to YHVH for showing me that I had become jaded. I shall have to amend my ways on an even grander scale than I thought. … π
That cd was awesome, only I couldn’t get UCK or reconstructor to add packages to it … but oh well.
I liked it too, really. I was considering using something like ISOMaster to manhandle it and further customize it to my liking, but aside from cutting
quiet splash
off the boot line, I think it’s already perfect. πIf you like this, you might be interested in the command line /console live CD that I have for download from http://inx.maincontent.net

It is based on Ubuntu 7.04 – so far various frame buffer issues have stopped me from making a newer version. The main difference from “Miniubuntu” is that this has quite a few apps added, including for example music players, a file sharing system with sshfs, and lots of other bits. It is designed mainly as an intro to the command line, and has tutorials.
There are menus from which you can navigate, and it comes in colour π
We are working on a simple installer – so far the installer is working in a virtual machine ( for example VBox or qemu). For more information, mail me at the email address given on the home page.
