Crux 2.5 released

It’s a small slice of the Linux demographic that will be interested, but Crux 2.5 hit the streets today. You can find the changelog here and release notes here. I’m seeding the torrent from the busted Thinkpad, which is running it as well.

Important guts include glibc 2.8, gcc 4.3.2, binutils 2.19, the 2.6.27.8 kernel and Xorg 7.4. Personally, I love the fact that there’s a precompiled version of Openbox 3.4.7.2 on the ISO, as well as a few other package additions that I regularly install.

I’m using it as I type and it’s working fine for me. My previous issues — upgrading to Xorg 7.4 from Crux 2.4, and the mysterious error compiling with gcc 4.3.2 — have both evaporated, most recently when bug No. 386 ( 😉 ) was swatted.

Performance is more or less identical to earlier versions of Crux, with boot times in under 15 seconds for a 1Ghz machine. I know it’s not for everyone, but what I get out of this machine is a huge step beyond any other distro I’ve tried.

I patiently await the arrival of the i586 version, mostly so I can kick my Sotec and my Fujitsu in the rear, and see if they respond. 😉

    Hi.

Jay512 and I over at linuxforums are getting our tails whipped with xorg. Unlike 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4, running startx or /etc/rc.d/xdm start causes a hard and deep freeze of mouse and keyboard necessitating a box kill and reboot. Ctrl – Alt – Backspace has no effect. Did you run into this at all? I’ve been wrestling with this for two days now, seeking and trying solutions from all over the net. Any help or insight you might provide would be very welcomed! Thanks! Yup, that’s the reliance of the new Xorg on hal and dbus. Since Crux doesn’t include those by default (or start them automatically unless you tell it to), you need the evdev driver and those two programs to make the mouse and keyboard work.

It’s another one of those “features” disguised as “bugs.” I hate those.

Check this for a quick solution. Or quicker than compiling those two, anyway.

    HAL, xserver 1.5.3 and AllowEmptyInput
