if you want useful words and a kinda graphical visualization, look at iftop
if you want hardcore (read it’s like wireshark), look up iptraf

here’s a plug for bitlbee, I’ve been using it for years here. It’s really nice having all your “chat” sessions in one app (whatever irc app you choose, irssi here).

bitlbee is an irc to im-network gateway.

not too hard to set up either…
