Ubuntu GTK1.2 Remix

As might have been predicted, the natural synthesis of this post and this post is this page. I guess I should have seen that coming.

But to be honest, it’s something I had been thinking about for a long time — which I kind of admitted a while ago. This should, if my plan goes through, give me an Ubuntu system that doesn’t take quite so long to set up the way I like it.

I doubt it’s anything new. Somewhere around this Internets there has to be somebody who has already swirled together a strictly GTK1.2 Ubuntu disc.

But since I went through the effort, I figured I’d share it. What the heck. I don’t even really know if the download link works; WordPress.com has always managed to bite me on the behind when it comes to attachments.

Give it a try and see what happens. As far as I know, it won’t steal your credit card number or kick your dog. So that’s two bonuses already. ;)

I have also been experimenting with an Ubuntu-derived live CD.

This time I am using the method given here:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomizationFromScratch

I find this is pretty easy and works well. I wanted to make it easier to revise and update the iso, so I wrote a a BASH script to perform the steps.

Besides doing it just for the hell of it, I want to build a rescue & recovery CD for my own use. There are lots of them out there already – I like System Rescue CD, RIP, Trinity Rescue Kit, etc., but none was just what I wanted.

Sorry for the duplicate post! I didn’t see that the first one went through.
    Again, I apologize.
Keep up the good work. Excellent blog.

I don’t know if I’m an idiot or what, but I CANNOT find your download link. Did you get rid of it, or am I just missing it?

You can find nearly 1,000 GTK-1.2 apps here:
    http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/amigolinux/download/Applications/

I’ve been collecting them for years, so I have lots of stuff that can’t be found anywhere else. On the other hand, your article(s) have pointed me to at least one that I didn’t have.

About my site, if you go up one level from the link above, you’ll find other categories of (mostly) lite stuff and there are a few gtk-1 apps not under the above link.

For building a desktop with panels/run-boxes, etc, look under:
    http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/amigolinux/download/DeskTop/

I even have a few things I’ve back-ported from gtk2 -like the minimo browser and others which I have hacked on -I have a highly-pathced version of ROX-Filer for gtk-1 with some features of later versions back-ported. I also use a unique version of gtk-1.2 itself which I put together using patches from about 10 distros -the file-selector widget is completely uniique as it combines dressed-up features from -uummm, gento and suse I think it was.

Anyone who knows of other gtk1 apps which are not on my site -please contact me directly via e-mail. I’d also love to have contact with aynone who knows a bit of C and gtk programming who could help with fixing or back-porting a couple of other apps.
