So network security was completely scrapped in order to install linux. In my opinion this was a failed conversion attempt and you have done much more harm than good.

hey dude,thanks for the help on the ubuntu install, although I am still terribly wet behind the ears. Still can’t figure out the movie issue, colors all wacky on xvid files. any help would be grand, since I get lost quickly in the back and forth and in technical descriptions of how to proceed.

Yes, it was straight Gnome, mostly for ease of transition but also because both machines were powerful enough to handle it. One owner had seen the Gnome version at work and used it a little on a friend’s computer, like I mentioned, and so I went with that. I suppose I should have pitched the KDE or XFCE versions, but I leave that for later.

What DE did you end up installing on these new installs? I’m assuming GNOME, but then again, you did use the alternate install cd.
