I have been searching for an alternative desktop for Window$ users for some time and have tested hundreds of Linux distros. Mint is THE BEST!!! Keep up the great work.

For BSD fans, PC-BSD is the only choice.

Most definitely. 900Mhz would be plenty fast for this, and the added packages will make it a very enjoyable system. Be prepared to tinker with it a little, to get it how you want. But when you’re finished it will be a very classy machine.

You say its not the best for a 450,256 but would a 900mhz,512mb be any better. I am trying to convince the wife to convert, the idea of java, flash, real player, etc included really appeals to me. I currently am running a debian system on a 500mhz,312mb and a 7gb hard drive which seems faster and better than our 900mhz,512mb laptop system.

It doesn’t just fit-on-cd. Linux Mint also fits on bootable USB flash drives. I haven’t made mine persistent, but it’s been very very handy as is and I’ve taken to leaving it in the car. The boot time isn’t too bad and it’s great having fully featured internet work on a computer that otherwise isn’t working.

its not based on debian – its based on linux mint 4

theres is a mint debian based alpha but that is merely an experiment and not the fluxbox version
