I’m gonna load it up with an Arch experiment I’ve been doing these last few months.

I’ve built a customized Arch Live CD (with installer and everything), I used the Larch scripts (gradgrind’s brilliant work, btw – credit where credit is due).

I just gathered my favourite software all in one place, one great app for each task (except for browsers and text editors, but those are my pitfall) and gave it a little “Onyric” flavour. I’ll just have to extend it with a few media specific stuff, and it’ll be good to go.

It’s booting to 23MB of RAM as it is (Fluxbox, PCManFM, idesk for a few icons, ivman to handle automounting, etc, etc).

I’ll surely post a few pics somewhere, and if you want to test drive it the LiveCD, I’ll be glad to tell you where to get that test .iso

Sweet! That’s like a brand new machine! Lucky you! Post pictures somewhere!

There’s a 1400 at work that’s running XP and it takes well over five minutes to start and get to a desktop. I think the boss damaged the core Explorer program with a bunch of crudware, and it’s sad to see a perfectly good computer running crippled like that.

Waaay faster, indeed!

On new computers you can hardly tell the difference, but we who like to play with dinoputers have to beware of http://WWW... W (What We Work… With).

I’ve just been offered a new toy to play with, not much of a dinoputer, though: a Compaq 900 laptop (AMD 1400+ !) which has a broken display. Looks like I just got a new media center

(and 5 minutes later, it was connected to my TV!)

That’s what it was. I corrected my adjusted file and now I get the full-scale Gmail site.

Which is kind of good and kind of bad. HTML is faster. … Hmm.

Maybe you had the user-agent defined in your old kzrc.orig file, the one you’re using in your kaze_clean script?

Even so, in older machines, I’d rather use the plain HTML Gmail. Web 2.0 isn’t plain-machine (gotta love the euphemism) friendly.

BTW, take a look at my 10 tab browser stress test and my Kazehakase/Epiphany mimic of Opera’s speed dial @ Ubuntuforums.

Hv3 surprised me the most, out of all those I tested. Especially when I saw 1/3 of my Thinkpad’s memory blown away by 10 open tabs, hehe.

Hmm. I have 0.5.0 running and the user agent is set to Mozilla, etc., but I still get the HTML version. I wonder if Gmail is set to that because I was using the earlier versions, and I need to enable the full style in Gmail. I’ll look at that later today. Thanks for reminding me.

Hehe, you’ve been force fed the simple HTML Gmail page in Kazehakase… because you still haven’t upgraded it. Version 0.4.9 corrected that (with a slight tweak of the browser user agent), and 0.5.0 is out, already. Not a landmark release, though, everything’s pretty much the same.

I think I did know that, but I use Kazehakase so much that it never becomes an issue. Gmail force-feeds Kazehakase the stripped-down HTML version, which doesn’t have those ads. I guess I really only noticed it because I was using a portable Firefox on the office computer … hence the traces of XP.
