Jamendo Thursday: Two keepers

Sometimes I think it would be nice if music fit neatly into one bracket or another. After all, that would make it easier for me to decide offhand if I might like something. Instead of sifting through dozens of albums to find the one or two that I like, I could make a more accurate guess just by its tag or category.

But of course, that’s ridiculous, since music shifts and slips between styles and types, sometimes from track to track or even minute to minute. So I’m content to keep sifting, downloading albums and running through them, throwing away the ones I dislike and keeping the ones I do. (And for the record, for every one I keep I probably listen to another six or seven. Tough life, isn’t it?)

Here are two that have been in my collection for almost as long as I’ve been visiting Jamendo.

Ben Othman
Lounge Cafe Tunis “Intellectuelle”

Ben Othman
Lounge Cafe Tunis “Sahria”

It’s hard to say if this is jazz, acid jazz, ambient, chill, house, world or something in between all of that. The style is could be called a mixture, or it could be called unique — either way, you’ll hear a lot of interesting expressions, all combined at once.

But the recipe is excellent, and the end product is fantastic. Beats are easy while the focus is given to the accompaniment, so the net effect is something like an exposition. You’re listening to the diversion, but the supporting portions are gratifying at the same time. (It’s hard to put a musical experience into words, isn’t it?)

Early tracks tend to be more sedate, but there are some more spunky arrangements as well. Like I was saying, music can change from song to song and minute to minute.

Sound quality is perfect, with no distortion or artifacts anywhere (unlike some other albums I’ve gotten off Jamendo). This definitely sounds professional.

Anyway, I hope you give it a try; I give it a very high endorsement. And really, there is a reason why it’s been in my collection for almost a year. ;)
