Sorry, I just a big problem...

I was updating my ubuntu 7.10 to 8.4, we all know that it consumes a lot of time, accidentally, I left my lap with out AC power, the
battery run out before the update was finished...

now when I turn on mi laptop.. The grub menu, fine...
the screen where you put username and password, fine..
BUT after typing username and password, it turns black, with my movable cursor... I can't manipulate anything, and it is not visible.

what can I do.??..
I have the ubuntu 7.10, but the 8.4 I don't have it yet..
what are my choices any idea?... thanks!!
